SEASON DETAIL - 1945-1946

When the War in Europe ended in May 1945, it was decided to resume with the FA Cup, which had been suspended during Wartime.  Some clubs were pushing for the Football League to be resumed, but at the Football League's annual meeting in July it was decided to continue with regional leagues for another season.  The teams who were in the 1st and 2nd Divisions before the War were put in either the Football League North or Football League South with no promotion or relegation.  Matches played in these competitions do not count as first class matches and players are not credited with appearances or goals.

Wednesday have a good start in the League, winning twelve of the opening seventeen matches and are in 2nd place by mid-December.  Curiously they do not draw any of these seventeen fixtures.  Unfortunately Wednesday go on a run of just two wins in fourteen matches in February and March and slip to 8th.  A decent run of five wins in the last seven matches (probably as a result of Jacky Robinson's return to the side at the end of March) sees them recover to finish 5th in the table, twelve point adrift of Champions Sheffield United.  Incidentally Wednesday finish the highest of the 2nd Division clubs.

It is decided to run the FA Cup ties on a two-leg basis.  Wednesday romp past 3rd Division Mansfield Town and York City before narrowly losing to 1st Division Stoke City in the 5th round, a massive attendance of 62,728 turning out to see legend Stanley Matthews play at Hillsborough.
