SEASON DETAIL - 1938-1939

The promotion race is extremely tight with half a dozen teams swapping places week in and week out for the 2nd place with Blackburn Rovers being in charge most of the season.  Wednesday start the season well, but a run of one win in nine matches sees them drop to 14th.  However eight wins from nine matches sees them back up to 3rd by mid February.  One defeat in the last twelve matches sees Wednesday end the season in 2nd place with Newcastle United, Luton Town, Chesterfield, Manchester City and Coventry City all falling by the wayside but Sheffield United still have a game remaining a week later.  They win the match with Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 to pip Wednesday to the 2nd promotion place by a point.  Ultimately promotion is lost by Wednesday's very average away form.

Wednesday continue the drawing theme in the FA Cup, embarrasingly drawing to Southern League Yeovil and Petters United (as they were known) at Hillsborough before winning the replay and then taking three matches to dispose of 3rd Division Chester in the 4th round, winning through in the 2nd replay at Maine Road.  In the 5th round Wednesday once again go to a 2nd replay against 1st Division Chelsea, losing at Highbury.
