Wednesday are promoted to the 1st Division (Tier 1).

In a terrific season Howard Wilkinson steers Wednesday to promotion, missing out on the 2nd Division Championship on goal difference.  Wednesday also reach the 5th round of the EFL Cup and the 6th round of the FA Cup.  In the League Wednesday go the first fifteen League matches unbeaten, beating the previous best ever start to a season of 14 matches unbeaten in 1899-1900.  The unbeaten run is nineteen matches in all competitions.  Wednesday are top of the table for much of the season, but two defeats and a draw in the last six matches means that Chelsea pip Wednesday to the Championship.

In the EFL Cup Wedneday beat 1st Division Stoke City in round 4 before losing to Liverpool at Anfield in a replay in round 5.

In the FA Cup Wednesday beat Barnsley in the 3rd round and 1st Division Coventry City in the 4th round before losing to 1st Division Southampton in the 6th round after a replay at The Dell.
