After war was declared on the 3rd September, the Football League was abandoned after three rounds of matches. The matches played were expunged from club's records and players were not credited with appearances or goals. However, football continued with ten regional leagues being formed as there was a fifty mile limit for travelling implemented by the government during this time. In the interests of public safety, the number of spectators allowed to see these games was limited to 8,000. These arrangements later being revised, and clubs allowed gates of 15,000 from tickets purchased on the day of the game through the turnstiles. Wednesday take part in the East Midlands League, with a War cup competition also being held.
Manager Jimmy McMullan pledges to keep faith with players on Wednesday's books and sticks to his word with Wednesday using just three "guest" players. However Wednesday struggle in the league and finish a disappointing 9th.
