Season DETAIL - 1952-1953

In a terribly inconsistent first season back in the top tier, Wednesday limp to 18th place in the League.  They are already on a run of four successive defeats, when Derek Dooley breaks his leg at Preston*.  The bad run continues with Wednesday picking up just seven points from sixteen matches and they are in 20th place going into the final match.  Thankfully Wednesday beat Sunderland 4-0 to finish in 18th, just a point ahead of Stoke City who are relegated along with Derby County.

*Derek Dooley breaks his leg in a 50/50 challenge with Preston goalie George Thompson in the match at Deepdale on the 14th February.  Hospitalised in Preston, gangrene sets in and tragically Dooley's leg has to be amputated to save his life.  Dooley scored an incredible 63 goals in 63 appearances for Wednesday, including 16 goals in 30 matches this season.
