In a terribly inconsistent first season back in the top tier, Wednesday limp to 18th place in the League.  They are already on a run of four successive defeats when Derek Dooley breaks his leg at Preston*.  The bad run continues with Wednesday picking up just seven points from sixteen matches and they are in 20th place going into the final match.  Thankfully Wednesday beat Sunderland 4-0 to finish in 18th, just a point ahead of Stoke City who are relegated along with Derby County.

*Derek Dooley breaks his leg in a 50/50 challenge with Preston goalie George Thompson in the match at Deepdale on the 14th February.  Hospitalised in Preston, gangrene sets in and tragically Dooley's leg has to be amputated to save his life.  Dooley scored an incredible 63 goals in 63 appearances for Wednesday, including 16 goals in 30 matches this season.

A remarkable statistic is that every home League attendance was over 30,000 and Wednesday averaged over 42,500 per home League match despite finishing in 18th.  The run extended into the adjoining seasons with the run of 30,000+ attendances reaching twenty-eight League matches in all.
