Wednesday's centenary season
The season starts well for the Owls, who are in the top three until the beginning of November, but a slump follows and by the time Alan Brown resigns to join Sunderland at the start of February, Wednesday are in 13th. Brown's No.2 Jack Marshall is appointed manager but the slump continues with Wednesday winning just two matches of his fifteen in charge and in the end only avoid relegation by two points from Sheffield United, who go down. Wednesday aren't helped by long-term injuries to Graham Pugh, who only makes two appearances and David Ford, whose season is decimated by injuries sustained in a car crash, followed by an operation on his knee.
The Football League changes the substitution rule this season to allow for tactical substitutions rather than just being able to bring on a substitute because of an injury.
Wednesday go out of both cup competitions to 1st Division teams.
