Season DETAIL - 1988-1989

Unfortunately Howard Wilkinson resigns to join Leeds United just 6 matches into the season.  Peter Eustace is named caretaker and after Wednesday unsuccessfully chase a number of managers, Eustace is named manager after one win in the League and one in the EFL Cup.  His term as manager is an absolute disaster as Wednesday only win just one of the sixteen matches he takes charge of and he is sacked with Wednesday in the relegation zone.  Chairman Bert McGee brings in the experienced Ron Atkinson, who stabilises the situation and Wednesday finish in 15th, three points above the relegation zone.

Wednesday are knocked out of the EFL Cup by 3rd Division (tier 3) Blackpool, losing the tie on away goals.

Wednesday are knocked out of the FA Cup by 2nd Division (tier 2) Blackburn Rovers.
