For some reason, Billy Felton and Rees Williams miss the 13:48 train from Sheffield, on which the rest of the Wednesday team travel.  Wednesday have to re-shuffle the team, with twelth man Charlie Petrie playing at right half-back and Jerry Jackson, the club's trainer takes to the field at outside-right.  Wednesday concede a goal after six minutes but manage to keep the score at 1-0 until Jackson, who is believed to be 46-47 years old, has to leave the field on thirty-five minutes.  Port Vale score within five minutes of Wednesday going down to ten men but Wednesday pluckily keep the score at 2-0 despite being a man down the rest of the match.

The spectators wonder why the two absent men couldn't have motored over to the Potteries and take part in the match.  Wednesday subsequently report the two players to the Football League.
