Wednesday are 2nd Division (Tier 2) champions for the 5th (and last) time in their history are are promoted to the 1st Division (Tier 1)

For the 3rd time in eight seasons after getting relegated to the 2nd Division the previous season, Wednesday immediately bounce back and are promoted as champions in Harry Catterick's first season as manager.  Wednesday go on a run of seven straight wins in September and October scoring twenty-seven goals in the process.  Wednesday also beat Lincoln City 7-0 to equal their record win in the 2nd tier.  Wednesday score 106 goals in their 42 matches, Roy Shiner being the top scorer with 28 goals.

Wednesday lose in the 3rd round of the FA Cup to 1st Division West Bromwich Albion.
