Season DETAIL - 2004-2005

Wednesday win the play-off final and are promoted to the Championship (Tier 2).

Following the sacking of Chris Turner nine matches into the season with Wednesday in 14th place in League One, Paul Sturrock famously steers Wednesday to a 5th place finish and the play-offs.  Wednesday beat Brentford in both legs of the semi-finals and meet Hartlepool United in the final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff (as Wembley is being rebuilt).

A crowd of 59,808, approximately 41,000 of them being Wednesday supporters see Hartlepool take a 2-1 lead, but Steven McLean comes off the bench to score the equalising penalty with just eight minutes left and send the match into extra time.  Wednesday score twice in extra time to win 4-2 and clinch promotion to the Championship.
