David Pleat's first season as Wednesday manager is a disappointing one.  Wednesday are terribly inconsistent and they end the season with just four wins from the last seventeen matches, finishing in 15th place, just two points above the relegation zone.

Wednesday disappointingly lose to Division 1 (tier 2) Charlton Athletic in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

Wednesday play in the Intertoto Cup for the 1st time, but do not progress beyond the group stage.  Unfortunately Wednesday don't take the competition seriously and with the players still on holiday, the team for the first match is largely made up of youngsters and loanees.  Wednesday lose the tie in Basel and with it the chance to progress beyond the group stage, Karlsruhr winning the group with Wednesday second.  Karlsruhr end up contesting the two-leg final and lose on aggregate to Bordeaux.  Both of Wednesday's home matches in the competition are played at Millmoor, Rotherham.
