SEASON DETAIL - 1985-1986

Wednesday qualify for the UEFA Cup, but English clubs are disqualified from European competition because of the Heysel disaster in May 1985.

In a good season for the Owls, Wednesday finish in 5th position in the League and reach the FA Cup semi-final.  Wednesday get off to a flying start in the League and are 2nd by the start of September.  A run of one win in seven matches sees them slip to 9th in early March but an unbeaten run in the last seven matches, including five wins, lifts them to a 5th place finish.  Notably Wednesday complete "doubles" over Birmingham City, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Oxford United, and Southampton.

In the FA Cup Wednesday beat 1st Division teams West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United on the road to the semi-final.  Wednesday face Everton at Villa Park Birmingham and the tie is level at 1-1 after 90 minutes.  Sadly Everton win the match in extra time.

In the EFL Cup Wednesday are dumped out by 4th Division (tier 4) Swindon Town in round 3.
