Wednesday who finished in 3rd place the previous season, get off to an inconsistent start and are in 12th place by early October.  However a run of one defeat in nineteen matches, winning fourteen of them sees them up to 2nd place.  With Wednesday hot on the heels of Arsenal, a disappointing run of just one win in the last nine matches results in a third place finish for the third season running.  It doesn't help Wednesday's cause that Ernest Blenkinsop misses nineteen matches with injury and international calls, particularly in the latter stages of the season and Tony Leach is sent off against against Wolves and receives a 28 day ban.

In the FA Cup Wednesday are dumped out in the 3rd round by 2nd Division Chesterfield after a replay.  Incidentally Chesterfield are subsequently relegated to the 3rd Division.
