Despite signing Paolo Di Canio in the summer, the season starts badly and David Pleat is sacked after 13 matches with Wednesday bottom of the league. Dave Richards brings back Ron Atkinson on a short-term contact and Wednesday recover to finish the season in 14th place, four points clear of relegation.  However Atkinson's contract is not renewed in the summer and some see it as payback for him deserting the club in 1991.

Wednesday are dumped out of the EFL Cup by Division 2 (tier 3) Grimsby Town over two legs.
