Season DETAIL - 1889-1890
Wednesday reach the FA Cup final for the 1st time in their history, losing to Blackburn Rovers and are Football Alliance Champions in the inaugural season of the competition.
The Football Alliance was founded at a meeting in Manchester on the 9th May 1889. Wednesday and a number of other clubs had been turned down for election to the Football League and at the instigation of Wednesday's President John Holmes, the Football Alliance was founded with 12 clubs as founder members. Mr Holmes was given the position of treasurer (hon.). Wednesday went on to win the Championship in the first ever Football Alliance season.
In the FA Cup, Wednesday beat London Swifts at Olive Grove in round one and 1st Division Accrington at Olive Grove in round two. In the 3rd round Wednesday play three matches against Notts County as protests from both teams cause two replays to be played, Wednesday winning through 2-1 at the County Ground, Derby. In the semi-final at Wellington Road, Birmingham, Wednesday met 1st Division Bolton Wanderers, who had already defeated Sheffield United 13-0 and Cup holders Preston in previous rounds. Wednesday triumphed 2-1 to reach the Final, which was played at the Kennington Oval, London. Unfortunately Wednesday are thrashed 6-1 by Blackburn Rovers who's six goals remain the record for the most by one team in an FA Cup final, equalled by Bury in 1903 and by Manchester City in 2019.
