The Football Association and Football League met on the 19th July, to discuss the playing of matches during Wartime. They decided that:
No International or FA Cup matches are to be played. Matches shall be played on Saturday afternoons and on early closing or recognised holidays. No remuneration shall be paid to players, nor shall there be any registration. All League players shall be free to play for any other club they please without any transefer being necessary, but no player can change his old club except as a matter of convenience of work or residence. Where there are two or more clubs in a town, players cannot "cross the street" to play for the other club.
A series of regional leagues were formed, with Wednesday being in the Midland Section. There was also a smaller subsidiary competition formed. Wednesday get off to a terrible start in the Midland Section, losing the first five matches. Their season thereafter is good but unfortunately they have a match postponed and one abandoned. With no midweek matches being possible Wednesday have to fit these matches in over Easter. They play the postponed match with Lincoln on good Friday, which isn't a Bank Holiday for the munitions industry (in which most of the players are employed) and have to play a scratch team made up of players brought in from local football. They also play on Easter Saturday, Bank Holiday Monday and play the abandoned match with Barnsley on Tuesday, so four matches in five days! Of course they struggle losing four out of five and it hits their final league position in both competitions.
