Season DETAIL - 2000-2001

Big things were expected of young manager Paul Jewell, who had won promotion to the Premier League with Bradford in 1998-99 and kept them there the following season.  In reality it was a nightmare and Jewell was sacked 31 matches into the season with Wednesday rock bottom of the division.  His No.2  Peter Shreeves took over as caretaker and helped Wednesday avoid relegation by winning 8 of his 15 matches in charge, Wednesday finishing in 17th place 5 points above the relegation zone.  Shreeves was appointed manager before the final match of the season.

Wednesday reach the quarter-final of the EFL Cup beating Sheffield United and Premier League West Ham United before losing to Birmingham City.

Premier League Southampton knock Wednesday out of the FA Cup in round 4.
