After saving Wednesday from relegation the previous season, Peter Shreeves resigns as manager after 13 matches with Wednesday bottom of the league. Terry Yorath takes over as caretaker for 6 matches before being promoted to manager but Wednesday only escape relegation by a single point.
Wednesday are knocked out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round by Crewe Alexandra, but get to the semi-final of the EFL Cup beating Premier League teams Sunderland and Aston Villa in the process. Premier League Blackburn Rovers are a step too far for Wednesday as they lose both legs of the semi-final tie. Blackburn go on to win the trophy beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
