SEASON DETAIL - 1962-1963

For the second season running Vic Buckingham's Wednesday finish 6th in the table.  After a disappointing start, Wednesday win six matches out of seven to go 6th by October.  A twelve match winless run follows and Wednesday start the New Year in 15th.  The season is badly disrupted in January and February by the "big freeze of 1963" but Wednesday lose just five of the remaining nineteen matches to finish in 6th place.

In the FA Cup Wednesday are taken to a replay by 3rd Division Shrewsbury Town before losing to Arsenal in the 4th round.

For the third season running, Wednesday decline to enter the Football League Cup (now EFL Cup).

Having finished 2nd, 4th and 5th in the previous season, Burnley, Everton and Sheffield United qualified for this season's European Fairs Cup.  However, entry was by invitation only and the Fairs Cup members decided to invite Everton, Sheffield Wednesday (who took part the previous season) and Birmingham City to take part.  The FA banned Wednesday and Birmingham from taking part and therefore England's only representative in the 1962-1963 season was Everton, despite Scotland having 3 representatives.  To this day Sheffield United have never played in European competition.
