SEASON DETAIL - 1973-1974

Wednesday win the final match of the season to avoid being relegated to the 3rd Division (Tier 3), for the first time in the club's history by just a point.  Unfortunately it only delays the inevitable as Wednesday are sunk without trace the following season, in probably the worst season in the club's history.

Wednesday make a decent start to the season and are 10th by the start of October, but a run of one win in fifteen matches sees them slip to 20th.  The poor run is in part due to a mystery virus that affects sixteen players between September and November.  At one point eleven players plus the manager are affected.  The fans are increasingly restless and attendances dip below the 8,000 mark.  Chairman Sir Andrew Stephens resigns in early December with Matt Sheppard taking over.  Derek Dooley is infamously sacked on Christmas Eve by Sheppard and Gerry Young takes over as caretaker, drawing four and winning one of his five matches in charge.  Steve Burtenshaw takes over with Wednesday in 20th and somehow Wednesday gain enough points to finish just above the drop zone in 19th.
