In a decent season, Wednesday look like promotion contenders for much of the season, but they only win three away matches all season and ultimately this costs them any chance of promotion.  They drop to 10th position by the end of the season.

In the FA Cup, Wednesday defeat Fulham before drawing 1st Division Crystal Palace in the 4th round.  The teams draw 1-1 at Hillsborough and Selhurst Park and the replay is scheduled for Villa Park.  Approximately 14,000 Wednesday travel to Birmingham and a Brian Joicey hat-trick sends them home happy with a 3-2 extra time victory.
