After being relegated to the 3rd Division for the first time, Wednesday desperately struggle again and Steve Burtenshaw - arguably Wednesday's worst ever manager - is finally sacked after eight matches. Len Ashurst is appointed but Wednesday still struggle. After a run of eleven matches without a win leaves Wednesday 22nd in the League, Wednesday's trainer Tony Toms, a former commando takes the players on a survival exercise on the snow covered moors above Stocksbridge. It turns out to be the coldest night of the year at just -2 deg. C and the players have just plastic sheets and sleeping bags for shelter from the biting winds. The exercise works and Wednesday beat Chester City to break the winless streak. Results improve but a run of just two wins in ten matches leaves Wednesday in 22nd place again with five matches left. Wednesday face Southend United in the last match of the season knowing that the loser will be relegated. Thankfully Wednesday win 2-1 and it is Southend who are relegated along with Colchester United and Halifax Town. Wednesday have never played in the 4th tier of the Football League.
