SEASON DETAIL - 1979-1980

Wednesday are promoted to the 2nd Division (Tier 2).

The so-called Boxing Day massacre changes the course of the season for Wednesday and Sheffield United.  A record crowd for the 3rd Division (tier 3) assembles for the 11:00 am kick off despite there being no bus service on Boxing Day.  United go into the match as clear favourites for promotion, Wednesday being 6 points adrift in 6th place with only 2 wins in the previous 7 matches.  The result sees Wednesday go on a sixteen match unbeaten run that earns them promotion to the 2nd Division while United are knocked out of their stride and finish the season in 12th place.  Wednesday are top of the League by early March, but only win four of the last twelve matches to finish 3rd and gain promotion by two points from Chesterfield.

Wednesday are knocked out of the EFL Cup by 1st Division Manchester City after a replay at Maine Road.  Wednesday take the lead with 10 minutes to go but Tony Henry scores two goals at the death to break Wednesday's hearts.
