SEASON DETAIL 2025-2026

The wages problems that hit Wednesday players and staff during the 2024-25 season continue into the close season with wages once again being paid late in May and June leading the EFL to place the club under a three transfer window embargo on the 18th June.  The club also owe money to HMRC and outstanding transfer fees to other clubs.  Several players including Josh Windass, Michael Smith and Callum Paterson reject new deals and walk out on the club.  Talented youngster Caelen Cadamarteri along with Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba are sold to pay debts, meaning Wednesday has lost it's four leading goalscorers from the previous season.

To add to Wednesday's problems it becomes clear that Danny Röhl does not want to continue as Wednesday's manager.  He reluctantly returns to the club in July only for players to declare that they didn't want him as manager and he is released from his contract by mutual consent along with many members of the backroom staff.  So with ten days to go before the start of the new season, Wednesday have just ten players over 21 in the squad, have no manager, have had no formal pre-season friendlies and face the closure of the North Stand due to structural problems.

In the EFL Cup 1st round Wednesday play their youngest ever side with an average age of just 20 against League One Bolton and win through on penalties.  Wednesday's side to face Premier League Leeds United has an average age of just 21 and remarkably Wednesday once again win through on penalties.
