SEASON DETAIL - 1943-1944

After having an extremely good season the previous season, Wednesday have a very disappointing season.  They apparently have forty players in the armed services this season, which could explain their poor performance.  They use a huge forty-seven different players, including twelve "guest" players.

In the Football League North 1st Championship Wednesday finish 40th out of the fifty clubs and in the 2nd Championship, which includes results gained in the Football League Cup, County Cup and Combined Counties Cup matches, Wednesday finish 30th out of fifty-six clubs.

In the Football League North Cup competition Wednesday qualify for the knockout stage, finishing the qualifying matches in 19th place despite only playing nine of the ten qualifying matches.  Unfortunately Wednesday are beaten in the 1st round proper by Bradford Park Avenue over two legs.

Wednesday take part in the County Cup, losing to Rotherham United over two legs and play in the new Combined Counties Cup competition.  Wednesday beat Lincoln City over two legs in the 1st round before losing to Huddersfield Town, again over two legs in the semi-final.  Huddersfield go on to meet Halifax Town in the final, Halifax winning the Cup 6-5 on aggregate.
