SEASON DETAIL - 1942-1943

Under caretaker manager Eric Taylor, Wednesday have easily their best Wartime season.  They finish in 3rd place in the Football League North 1st Championship - the highest placed 2nd Division team.  Although they only lose three away matches, their total of three away wins costs them the Championship.

In the 2nd Championship where Cup matches count towards League position Wednesday finish 5th.  Once again it's their poor away form with just two way wins that costs Wednesday a higher place.  Remarkably non-League Lovell's Athletic finish in 2nd place.  Lovell's were a sweet manufacturer's works team from Newport, Wales.

Wednesday also reach the final of the Football League (North) Cup, losing to 1st Championship winners Blackpool over two legs.  Wednesday are winning 2-1 in the 1st leg but a bit of magic from legend Stan Matthews enables Blackpool to score an equaliser in the dying seconds of the match.  Matthews doesn't play in the  2nd leg due to being on England duty and Wednesday are unfortunate to be without the previously ever-present Ted Catlin, who was injured in the 1st leg.  Unfortunately Blackpool manage to win 2-1 at Hillsborough to clinch the Cup.  It's Wednesday's only home defeat of the season.

Apart from the Cup final, the highlight of the season for Wednesday supporters is surely the team's record 8-2 thrashing of Sheffield United in the 2nd Championship!

For some reason Wednesday who apparently play twenty-one qualifying matches are only credited with twenty matches in the final table for the 2nd Championship.
