In the first season after WW2, Wednesday really struggle, giving debuts to an astonishing nineteen players. They are in 21st place for a number of weeks, but thankfully do just enough to avoid the unthinkable relegation to the 3rd Division for the first time in their history, finishing in 20th place, three points above Swansea Town (now City). Notably the season runs into June as the "Big Freeze" of 1947 disrupts matches between January and March.
Interestingly, in January Wednesday announce that the Sheffield United trainer/coach Dugald Livingstone will become their new manager after the Blades FA Cup 4th round replay has been played. "Dug" as he is known has a change of heart and decides to stay at Bramall Lane. He went on to manage Sparta Rotterdam, the Irish and Belgian national teams and a number of English clubs including Chesterfield.
In the FA Cup, Wednesday beat 1st Division teams Blackpool and Everton in the 3rd and 4th rounds before falling to another 1st Division team Preston North End in the 5th round.
