SEASON DETAIL - 1980-1981

Wednesday are promotion contenders all season and are in 3rd place in early March but lose eight of the last ten matches to finish a disappointing 10th.  Yugoslavian (now known as Montenegro) Ante Miroĉević becomes Wednesday's first ever truly foreign player.

The season is remembered as the one where Wednesday fans rioted at Oldham.  Bad boy Simon Stainrod (former Sheffield United and future Wednesday player) clashed with Terry Curran.  Stainrod allegedly feined being kicked by Curran and referee Tyson sent Curran off.  The Wednesday supporters went wild and play was held up for twenty seven minutes as missiles were hurled at policemen.  Wednesday were hit with a four match ban on away support and no standing was allowed at Hillsborough for four matches.

Wednesday beat Sheffield United over two legs in the 1st round of the EFL Cup before losing to Watford in the 3rd round.
