In a terribly inconsistent season, Wednesday struggle to 19th place.  They finish three points above Sheffield United who also escape relegation by three points from Middlesbrough with Liverpool bottom of the League.  Strangely Wednesday only win three away League matches all season, but win all of their three away FA Cup matches.

In an eight match FA Cup run, Wednesday get to the semi-final.  Wednesday beat local rivals Sheffield United and Chesterfield in rounds 3 and 4, both after drawing the home match and winning the replay away from home.  In the 5th round Wednesday beat 2nd Division Everton and once again draw the home match with Bolton and win the replay to progress to the semi-final against Preston North End.  The match at Maine Road, Manchester is a disappointment, Preston winning 2-0 with Jackie Sewell being stretchered off just after Preston's opening goal.
