The so-called great escape season.

By the 17th March, Wednesday have managed just six wins from thirty-two matches and with ten matches to go are rooted to the bottom of the league, seven points behind the nearest team and looking doomed to relegation.  Remarkably they win seven of the remaining matches, drawing the other three and actually finish 14th in the league, although they only have one point more than Tottenham Hotspur, who are relegated alongside Middlesbrough.  Wednesday go on to win the Football League Championship in the following two seasons!  The catalyst to Wednesday's success is undoubtably the passing of the captaincy from Fred Keen to Jimmy Seed after the 2-0 defeat to Bolton on the 29th February.  Seed proves to be an inspirational captain.  Ironically he was signed from Tottenham Hotspur, who are relegated as a result of Wednesday's miraculous escape.

In the FA Cup Wednesday beat 3rd Division teams Bournemouth and Swindon Town in the 3rd and 4th rounds before losing to bitter rivals Sheffield United in the 5th round at Bramall Lane after drawing at Hillsborough.  The two ties are seen by over 116,000 spectators.
