The so-called great escape season.
By the 17th March, Wednesday had managed just 6 wins from 32 matches and with 10 matches to go were rooted to the bottom of the league, 7 points behind the nearest team and looking doomed to relegation. Remarkably they won 7 of the remaining matches, drawing the other 3 and actually finished 14th in the league, although they only had one point more than Tottenham Hotspur, who were relegated alongside Middlesbrough. Wednesday then went on to win the Football League Championship in the following two seasons! The catalyst to Wednesday's success was undoubtably the passing of the captaincy from Fred Keen to Jimmy Seed after the 2-0 defeat to Bolton on the 29th February. Seed proved to be an inspirational captain. Ironically he was signed from Tottenham Hotspur, who were relegated as a result of Wednesday's miraculous escape.
In the FA Cup Wednesday beat 3rd Division teams Bournemouth and Swindon Town in the 3rd and 4th rounds before losing to bitter rivals Sheffield United in the 5th round at Bramall Lane after drawing at Hillsborough. The two ties are seen by over 116,000 spectators.
