After flirting with relegation the previous season, Wednesday struggle once again and after a run of one win in eight matches, Paul Sturrock is sacked after 12 matches with the team 21st in the league. Caretaker Sean MaAuley steadies the ship with three wins and a draw before Brian Laws takes over. Wednesday lose only one of the final thirteen matches and finish in a very respectable 9th place.
Wednesday disappointingly lose to League Two (tier 4) Wrexham in the 1st round of the EFL Cup and lose to Premier League Manchester City in the 3rd round of the FA Cup after holding them to 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.
