After being runners-up last season under Harry Catterick, new manager Vic Buckingham steers Wednesday to a 6th place finish. Wednesday's season is up and down. They start well and are top in September, only to slump to 11th in mid October. Wednesday rise to 4th in early December, but another slump sees them down to 12th in April. Four wins from the final four matches sees them finish in 6th place.
In the FA Cup, Wednesday beat 2nd Division Swansea and Nottingham Forest before losing to Manchester United after a replay in the 5th round. Both ties with United attracting attendances over 65,000.
For the second season running, Wednesday decline to enter the Football League Cup (now EFL Cup) as they are taking part in the Fairs Cup.
Having finished 2nd last season, Wednesday are invited to take part in the European Fairs Cup for the first time. Wednesday beat French team Olympique Lyonnaise and Italian team AS Roma before losing over two legs to Barcelona - Wednesday winning the first leg at Hillsborough 3-2.
