Big things were expected from Wednesday's new manager and former player Danny Wilson, who had won promotion to the Premier League with Barnsley in 1996-97. His first season is an average one with Wednesday finishing 12th despite losing Paolo Di Canio in September. Di Canio clashed with Arsenal's Martin Keown and both players were dismissed. Di Canio reacted by pushing over referee Paul Alcock. He received an eleven match ban, a £10,000 fine and sadly never played for wednesday again. Some blame must be laid at Danny Wilson's door for the way the situation with Di Canio was handled.
Wednesday are humiliated by Division 3 (tier 4) Cambridge United in the EFL Cup. Wednesday lose the home leg of the 2nd round tie and can only manage a draw at the Abbey Stadium.
