After finishing in 8th the previous season, hopes are high but a 10-match winless run leaves Wednesday bottom of the League and Len Ashurst is sacked.  Ken Knighton takes over for the Chesterfield match and Jack Charlton watches from the North stand as Wednesday get their first win of the season.  He likes what he sees and signs as manager after the match, telling the press "I must be bloody crazy!".  Under Charlton Wednesday gradually climb the League and finish in a respectable 14th place.

In the FA Cup Wednesday are dumped out in the 2nd round by non-league Wigan Athletic, Jack Charlton remarking "we lost the match but found a player", referring to David Grant who makes his Wednesday senior debut.

Wednesday reach the 5th round of the EFL Cup before being knocked out by 1st Division Everton.
