After finishing in 18th place the previous season, Wednesday struggle again and after a run of 3 defeats left them in 23rd place in the league, Jones is dismissed 16 matches into the season. Stuart Gray, a member of Jones' coaching staff is appointed caretaker manager and after winning 6 out of 12 matches, Gray is appointed as Head Coach. However one win in the last eight matches sees Wednesday stutter to 16th place by the end of the season.
Wednesday disappointingly lose to League One (tier 3) Rotherham United in the 1st round of the EFL Cup at the New York Stadium.
