WEDNESDAY TAKE PART IN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE CENTENARY TOURNAMENT, AKA THE MERCANTILE CREDIT FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

The tournament to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Football League was held over two days at Wembley Stadium.  The tournament featured sixteen teams, who qualified based on points accrued from League games during a specified time window.  The following teams took part:

1st Division

Everton, Liverpool, Luton Town, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Wimbledon

2nd Division

Aston Villa,Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leeds United

3rd Division

Sunderland, Wigan Athletic

4th Division

Tranmere Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers

The first day of the tournament on the 16th April held matches in the 1st round and quarter finals.  Matches were of 40 minutes duration.

The second day of the tournament on the 17th April held matches in the semi-finals and final.  Matches were 60 minutes duration.
